Donald Byrd’s “Black Byrd” from 1973 marked a significant shift for the veteran jazz trumpeter toward funk and R&B-influenced sounds on Blue Note Records. Working with the Mizell Brothers as producers, Byrd incorporated electric keyboards, funky basslines, and vocal arrangements that departed from his earlier hard bop work. The album features the popular title track “Black Byrd” and “Street Lady,” both of which became staples of the jazz-funk movement and helped introduce Byrd’s music to a broader, younger audience.
